If you want to know the scale and complexity of Egypt’s historic railway network and its 1059 trains of an astonishing 9 different passenger accommodation types serving the country’s 732 railway stations (in 2004), this is the book for you. Great for romantics and armchair travellers everywhere, this is a beautiful translation and repackaging of the original Arabic all-lines Egyptian Railways 2004 timetable. The only Egyptian timetables from this era in English generally only covered the air-conditioned services, ignoring the bulk of the 3rd class services on secondary and branch lines.

Gary Goldfinch turned the original into an attractive easy-to-read book of 97 pages, increasing the size to A4 and reworking the tables using the stylishly legible Maiandra font in full colour so readers can easily follow individual train services. Every footnote and symbol is faithfully included, using timetable best practice to improve comprehension.

As well as including every passenger train service in Egypt in all 31 tables, covering the area from the Libyan and Sudanese borders to Sinai, desert oases and the Cairo suburbs, this book is enhanced by the addition of 3 maps showing a schematic of Lower Egypt (north of Cairo) services, a full Egyptian railway system map and a diagrammatic map of Cairo Metro Lines 1 & 2. The timetable has a full alphabetical passenger station list covering all 732 stations and halts with timetable references, a full key to symbols and full footnotes.

This fascinating easy-to-follow book makes the perfect companion to any or all of our ‘Cairo to the Coast’ series of films.
